We tend to compare ourselves with those whom we perhaps envy, rather than with a representative cross-section. At this stage of my life I feel no envy - I would prefer to live in Diogenes' barrel. But I admit to enjoying an upholstered, centrally-heated barrel - there are limits to my asceticism (limits some might think are quite quickly reached).<br /><br />I spent three years of my life in Calcutta, and there I was very conscious of living in great luxury compared to the street-dwellers.
